GT1 demonstrates support for Make Roads Safe

The FIA GT1 World Championship underlined its support for the Make Roads Safe campaign during a visit by the FIA president Jean Todt to Nurburgring.

The Nissan GT-R safety car was the centrepiece of this awareness activation. All 46 drivers signed the car alongside Todt in a public display of association and support.

Additionally all the GT1 drivers competing this weekend joined in a photo session with President Todt to display the integration between Make Roads Safe, the FIA and GT1.

The championship safety car carries the campaign slogan to the race tracks of the world. The driver signatures, along with that of Todt and Stephane Ratel, the GT1 Championship founder, will remain on the safety car for the rest of the season.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging urgent action to prevent the daily tragedy of thousands of deaths and injuries on the world’s roads. Founded in 2006, the campaign has achieved a first ever Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety and approval by the UN for a Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-20.

Speaking at a press conference, Todt provided an update on the campaign progress. “Everybody understands the importance of road safety, last year there was 1.3 million fatalities on the roads around the world and predictions are very bad for the next ten years so it’s time for action," he said.

“Road safety is the responsibility of society, governments, racing teams and of course the FIA and it is great that the FIA GT1 World Championship is involved, it really helps.

“The photo we took this morning with my colleagues and all the GT1 drivers was a great demonstration of the synergy between the campaign and GT1.”
