Q&A: Richard Westbrook, Matech Ford GT No.5
Richard Westbrook, the reigning FIA GT2 champion, has joined Matech Competition and will race alongside Thomas Mutsch in the Ford GT No.5 at Spa.
The 35-year-old Englishman talked to GT1World.com about his objectives on his maiden GT1 outing.
Q: How will the FIA GT1 World Championship compare to anything else you have competed in?
A: It will be interesting to learn the new format - two sprint races and the qualifying system looks interesting, I'm sure there is a lot of strategy to learn.
Q: How well do you know your team-mate (Thomas Mutsch)?
A: I've met Thomas at the workshop and I think we have a similar way of working but you will only really find out at the race weekend. He's very quick, knows the Ford very well and is second in the Championship so I'm very happy to be joining Thomas
Q: What challenges do you think Spa-Francorchamps will present to the drivers?
A: Everyone is familiar with the track so its really all about finding a set-up which works for the ultra-quick corneres and the more technical section in the second sector. The track is pretty hard on tyres and we all know about the famous weather at Spa.
Q: What part of the circuit are you most looking forward to driving on?
A: All of it except the gravel.
Q: The weather is always unpredictable at Spa – are you confident the team can be competitive in both dry and wet conditions?
A: I have joined a leading team who has a lot of experience so I know I will have one of the best cars, wet or dry.
Q: What are your objectives for the race weekend?
A: I have to learn quickly because my goal is to help Thomas (Mutsch) become world champion. It will be a steep learning curve but I know the track very well and now I have to learn the car and keep Thomas scoring points
