Todt impressed with the 'show'
FIA president Jean Todt spent last weekend at the Nurburgring, checking on the progress of the FIA GT1 World Championship, and came away impressed.
Todt was on hand for a press conference on Sunday shortly after taking part in a driver autograph signing session to promote the FIA-backed Make Roads Safe campaign.
During the press conference and in subsequent interviews, he gave the FIA's newest world championship a strong personal endorsement.
“There is a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of action and a lot of competition and a good spirit. And I must say that it is a big tribute to what Stephane Ratel has done over the years to prepare this international GT1 World Championship,” he said.
“When something is new you have to put in a lot of effort, we cannot expect to have the tribunes full of spectators, but it's what we need to aim for that and achieve it.
The format of the championship – two, one-hour sprint races and the Balance of Performance tests aimed at levelling the playing field for the GT1 cars – had added to the spectacle he said.
“There is the product, there are the people, the competitors, organisers and promoters. I think that the regulations are made in a way to have cars very close to each other, now we need to make the world aware of this championship.”
